After two mega characters were sensationally killed off in the most recent season of Downton Abbey, Michelle Dockery has promised no similar twists in the new run.

The actress plays Lady Mary in the beloved period drama, and has said that, as far as she knows, no pivotal characters will meet a sticky end. It is known, however, that footman Alfred (Matt Milne) will be bowing out.

Dockery said:

“We’re all doing series 5 next year.”

Speaking about the departure of Matthew Crawley in a sudden car crash in the Christmas special, she recalled:

“My first reaction was, ‘Oh crap, what is going to happen?’ I thought, ‘Where can the story go now,’ we spent all this time having this on-off, will-they/won’t-they relationship?”

However, on her character’s future, she admitted:

“The fourth [season] is about recovery. She’s starting a new life. There’s various suitors that are being thrown in her direction.

“But she’s very reluctant to go through with any of it because, of course, she can’t stop thinking about Matthew. It’s hard to bond with the baby because, of course, she’s going through the grief.”
