Former Dawson’s Creek star James Van Der Beek has criticised the show for its outlandish plot twists.

The teen drama was a cult hit for six seasons but had so many head writers during its time on air that the tone often shifted dramatically.

Van Der Beek was taking part in a Q&A on Reddit when he was asked for his thoughts on when the show “jumped the shark”, to which he pointed to an incident as early as season two.

“When I had to convince Katie [Holmes]’s character to wear a wire to snitch on her drug dealing dad because a molotov cocktail had been thrown through a window, I remember thinking, ‘What show am I on again?'” he recalled.

But he added that he didn’t necessarily think that everything was bad from that point

“Then we crossed back over and got back to more relationship stuff,” he said. “Six head writers in six years will take you all over the map.”
