Katy Perry has finally unveiled her new single ‘Roar’, and admitted that she wrote it about her time in therapy. The singer sent her fans into excitement overdrive over the weekend when the song leaked ahead of its official premiere yesterday (August 12).

Speaking to Radio 1’s Scott Mills, she said the track is based on the “resentment” she felt when she neglected to voice her feelings and opinions on certain topics.

She said:

“I wrote it because I was sick of keeping all these feelings inside and not speaking up for myself, which caused a lot of resentment.

“Obviously I’ve been through a lot of therapy since my last record and that’s what this is about.”

‘Roar’ has been compared heavily to Sara Bareilles’ ‘Brave’, a song that Perry herself said she liked just a few months ago. However, Bareilles appears to have distanced herself from any potential nastiness, writing on her Twitter page:

“All love, everybody. All love.” She added a string of heart symbols.
