Music legend Sir Paul McCartney has come out in favour of the One Direction phenomenon. The ex-Beatles icon has said that he can completely understand why the lads – Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne and Harry Styles – have become global phenomenons, selling out arenas in an alarming number of countries.
“I like One Direction. They’re young, beautiful boys and that’s the big attraction,” he told Sky News, whilst promoting his latest album New.
The hype around 1D has often been compared to that of The Beatles, and he seemed to support that as well, admitting:
“They can sing and they can make good records, so I think that’s what I would see in common.”
He added:
“I always think it’s a little bit unfortunate when you call [bands] the new Beatles. It can be the kiss of death because people expect you to live up to what we did.”
Do you think One Direction are the modern equivalent of The Beatles?
