Singer Ellie Goulding has opened up about being ahead of Lady Gaga in the UK charts this week. ‘Burn’ has enjoyed a good lead over ‘Applause’ all week and is set to comfortably secure the No1 spot on Sunday.
“It feels quite funny because I remember there was a similar thing when Lights, my album, was up against Gaga’s and it somehow got to No.1 above her album, so it feels like that again,” she told Metro.
“It’s her big comeback single and she hasn’t released anything in a while. Hopefully mine will stay at the top. It’s put up a really good fight.
“It’s mad. I don’t put myself on as high a level as Katy Perry and Lady Gaga. I’ve still got a long way to go. I’ve toured with Katy and I met Lady Gaga when I won the Brit Award but they’ve both been an inspiration to me.”
She also spoke about her success in America, revealing that trying to crack the market was “exhausting”.
“It’s still something I will never comprehend because I came to America for a couple of years, trying to make it out here,” she said.
“It was happening slowly and I built up a fan base doing meet-and-greets after my shows with 300 people every night so I was exhausted but it started to pay off.
“During that time Lights started climbing up the charts very slowly. I think it has the record for the slowest climb to No.1. It was bizarre. The VMA thing is just crazy. I am going to be there because it’s a really big thing for me.”
