Macklemore has modestly insisted that Kendrick Lamar should have won Best Rap Album at the 2014 Grammys, not him.
The ‘Same Love’ star won four trophies at the ceremony, but there’s one prize that he thought should have been scooped by his friend Kendrick rather than himself.
Posting to Instagram after the ceremony, he shared the text message he sent his pal – captioning it: “My text to Kendrick after the show. He deserved best rap album… I’m honored and completely blown away to win anything much less 4 Grammys. But in that category, he should have won IMO.
“And that’s taking nothing away from The Heist. Just giving [Good Kid, M.A.A.D City] it’s proper respect..”
He added:
“With that being said, thank you to the fans. You’re the reason we were on that stage tonight. And to play Same Love on that platform was a career highlight. The greatest honor of all. That’s what this is about. Progress and art. Thank you. #grammys”
In the text itself, he notes that he wanted to give Kendrick Lamar a shout-out during his acceptance speech, but he “froze” when the music started playing him out.
