One Direction’s Midnight Memories has won the title of 2013’s best-selling album at the last minute – stealing the lead from Emeli Sande’s Our Version Of Events.
The Scottish singer’s LP was the best-seller of 2012, but continued its momentum throughout 2013 – and, until last week, was on course to finish on top of the heap for this year as well. However, the former X Factor boyband pinched the lead in the eleventh hour.
Our Version Of Events’ final sales tally stands at 683,000 copies, while Midnight Memories is marginally ahead on 685,000.
Liam Payne said:
“This tops an amazing year for us.
“We’re so excited to have the biggest-selling album in the UK this year, especially with a record we are all so proud of. We’d like to thank everyone who has bought the album, it really means a lot to us.”
Martin Talbot of the Official Charts Company added:
“Hearty congratulations should go to One Direction. It is a huge honour to become the biggest seller of any year. To do so in such a short amount of time is a very impressive achievement.”
