Ben Whishaw has confirmed speculation that he is gay, and tied the knot with his long-term partner. The Skyfall actor entered into a civil partnership with composer Mark Bradshaw in Sydney last year, and they will celebrate their first anniversary later this month.
Asked for confirmation by the Daily Mail, the actor’s publicist finally admitted the details about his private life that he had hoped to keep secret.
“Ben has never hidden his sexuality, but like many actors he prefers not to discuss his family or life outside of his work,” they explained.
“Due to speculation, I can confirm that Ben and Mark entered into a civil partnership in August 2012. They were proud to do so and are very happy.”
The pair are thought to have met on the set of Bright Star, a film about the poet John Keats, Whishaw played the lead role while Bradshaw composed the score.
Whishaw had previously said of his personal life:
“For me, it’s important to keep a level of anonymity. As an actor, your job is to persuade people that you’re someone else. So if you’re constantly telling people about yourself, I think you’re shooting yourself in the foot.”
