Joe McElderry has been crowned the surprise winner of a poll to find the best X Factor contestants of all time. The singer, who has had three Top 10 albums, beat the likes of Olly Murs and One Direction in the survey, conducted by AMAZEPOP.
Twins Jedward ended up coming in second place, narrowly ahead of girlband Little Mix, who won the show in 2011. One Direction, the most commercially successful act to come out of the series, sneaked into the Top 10 at No8, just behind Cher Lloyd.

Last year’s “novelty act” Rylan Clark made it as far as No5, while Leona Lewis – the first star of the show to enjoy transatlantic success – came in sixth.
