EastEnders viewers have been enjoying an explosive plot involving Janine Butcher in recent weeks, but the actress who plays her has admitted that she doesn’t see the controversial character as a murderer.
Janine was seen fatally stabbing the father of her daughter, Michael Moon, as the bitter feud between them came to a head. She also managed to successfully frame Alice Branning for the act.
This Christmas, Janine will be seen confessing all to David Wicks.. but then quickly regretting it. Ahead of her exit from the BBC soap, Charlie Brooks – who has played Janine on-and-off since 1999 – said:
“We had discussions about Janine stabbing Michael because it had to come from a place of self-defence.
“There was a scrabble for the knife, and it was either him or her. For me as an actress, Janine has to remain redeemable. She is not a killer to me.”
Janine had previously been seen getting into a fight with then-husband Barry (Sean Williamson) on top of a steep hill, before he fell to his death.
Brooks added:
“As for Barry, Janine didn’t do away with him, did she? He slipped – he really did!”
