Selena Gomez has responded to criticism from rising star Lorde, after the 16-year-old slated Gomez’s track ‘Come And Get It’ for its representation of women.
The song, which was a chart hit around the world earlier this year, came under fire from ‘Royals’ hitmaker Lorde, who said:
“I’m a feminist and the theme of [Gomez’s] song is, ‘When you’re ready come and get it from me’… [and] I’m sick of women being portrayed in this way.”
Awkwardly, Selena has said she is a huge fan of Lorde in the past, and even performed ‘Royals’ as part of her set list on her recent Stars Dance tour.
Asked about the comments by Hot 99.5’s The Kane Show, she admitted that she still thinks highly of her new rival – but think she’s contradicting herself a little.
“I appreciate everybody’s opinion, especially because I’ve covered [Lorde’s] music lots of times,” she said. “I think she is super-talented and I think it’s awesome.
“But… in my opinion it’s not feminism if you’re tearing down another artist.”
She added:
“You know, she’s young, she’s got so much talent… so I don’t take it to heart.”
