A major character of animated sitcom Family Guy was unexpectedly killed off in a new episode last night.
Brian Griffin, the dog voiced by Seth Macfarlane, was seen being run over by a car, with Stewie Griffin – also voiced by Macfarlane – unable to save him.

He was immediately replaced by a new dog, called Vinnie – despite being part of the show’s core cast since it first launched in 2009. Fans of the show have reacted with rare passion to the news, with over 100,000 Likes already accumulated on a Facebook page entitled “RIP Brian Griffin From Family Guy.
What’s more, a petition on Change.org called “Seth MacFarlane, and Fox Broadcasting Company: Bring Brian Griffin Back To Family Guy” has reached 1,500 signatures.
Multiple words and phrases relating to the controversial episode have also been trending on Twitter since the broadcast as well.
