Gabriella Cilmi in backstage breakdown before record label departure

Australian singer Gabriella Cilmi has opened up on her departure from her record label, explaining that she had a breakdown backstage at one of her gigs.

The singer released the huge smash ‘Sweet About Me’ in 2008, before relaunching as an electro-pop star two years later. However, the second album didn’t do so well, peaking at the wrong end of the Top 30. The performance of it led to Cilmi parting ways with her label, and she seems to stand by the decision today – even though she now has to release songs independently.

She tells AMAZEPOP in an new interview: “I remember one day having to perform at a sports event in front of all these men. We were doing On A Mission, with this dance routine. I just remember crying and crying in the toilets, not wanting to go on.

“And I realised, you know, maybe this is not the route that I wanted to go down. It’s funny, that album – I don’t think it was promoted for the music. It was more the other side of things.

She went on:

“So I was like, ‘I think something’s a little bit wrong’. The label were like, ‘Oh, you can make a covers record!’. And I was just like, ‘Well, I’m 19, I don’t wanna make a covers record yet’, you know? I broke up with them.”

Gabriella releases her new single The Sting on September 2. Have you heard it yet?
