Tom Hanks has revealed that he was recently diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. During an interview on the long-running Late Show With David Letterman, he also said that he has had the symptoms of the condition for 20 years.

He explained:

“My doctor said, ‘Look, if you can weigh as much as you weighed in high school, you will essentially be completely healthy. You will not have Type 2 diabetes’.

“And then I said to her, ‘Well, then, I’m gonna have Type 2 diabetes because there is no way I can weigh as much as I did in high school’.”

Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of the condition, and is manageable by exercise with appropriate diet and treatment. Hanks is currently promoting his new film Captain Phillips, in which he plays the titular captain of a ship hijacked by Somali pirates. It’s out on October 18 in the UK and October 11 in the US.

It’s also slated to open the BFI London Film Festival, which runs from October 9 to October 20.
